We’re kicking off the 2020 year with a fabulous new year get together!

Finding Inspiration

  • Hear from Fifi Coston talking about her experience and enthusiasm for Wearable Art.
  • Fifi has a richly varied career as an award-winning junior fiction novelist, children's book illustrator, film costumier and prop designer and long-standing TV presenter of arts and crafts.
  • On top of all that Fifi is a veteran of Wearable Arts with 26 finalist entries over 24 years. 
  • In 2017, her piece The Organ Farmer won the Weta Workshop Science Fiction Award. 
  • She will also bring the interesting perspective of being the wife of a 'would-be investor', Adrian Parkyn!

Branch Meetings and Next Education Course

We meet on the second Tuesday of most months from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Meetings take place at the Khandallah Town Hall at 11 Ganges Rd, Khandallah.  This is very close to the Box Hill railway station (on the Johnsonville line) and there are regular buses to the Khandallah village (no's 24 and 25).

Easy and accessible parking is available on the street at the venue.  For more information email wellington@nzshareholders.co.nz.

Share Investing Quiz Night - informal social evening
As an alternative to having a Christmas function, we are starting the year with an informal get together.  And what better way to do this than doing this over refreshments!  Plus hear all about WOW from Fifi Colston.
This will be great for both seasoned investors and those completely new to investing...and as you will get split up into teams you will get to know each other a bit more over the evening!  Plus we will have a few random general knowledge type questions thrown in to keep you all on your toes! Tue 10 Mar Robbie Urquhart - Barramundi Fund Portfolio Manager, Fisher Funds Management Ltd

Our guest speaker for March is Robbie Urquhart, Barramundi Fund Portfolio Manager.  Robbie has worked as a portfolio manager and analyst since 2001 in both New Zealand and London where he held various roles with Trafalgar Copley, Copenhagen Capital and FNZC. He holds a Master of Business Studies in Finance (First Class Honours) from Massey University, and prior to this completed a BCom (cum laude) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
Sharesight shows Barramundi being up 19.4% over the last 12 months, providing a dividend yield of 9.6% and capital gain of 9.8%. They have also made headlines in the NZ Herald, (‘Barramundi gives BHP the flick’) where Robbie explained; the fund had "drawn a line in the sand" over BHP's continued production of thermal coal – burnt in power stations to generate electricity.  Hear Robbie outline his investment strategy for Barramundi, the Responsible Investing Policy they have in place and his expectation of continued earnings growth.

EDUCATION COURSES - Two identical courses i) Saturday 4 April & ii) Sunday 5 April 

Back by popular demand we are re-run a new and improved investment education course.  There are two date options to choose from, either Sat 4 April or Sun 5 April.   This course is ideal for you if you are wanting to refresh and update your investment knowledge. The course is especially ideal for people new to share investment and wanting to understand how to get started.

Venue:  NZX Building, 1st Floor, 11 Cable St, Wellington. 
Registrations:   to open shortly.     

Timing: 10am and finishing at 3pm with a one hour break for lunch.
Facilitators: Martin Dowse and Phil Kelliher (Wtg Branch Committee Members) who bring a wealth of experience and specialist knowledge in share investment…and will be making this a fun, interactive and involving workshop style course.


 

Tue 14 April Mark Malpass - Steel & Tube Holdings Ltd (STU)

Our guest speaker for April is Mark Malpass, CEO of Steel & Tube Holdings.  Mark first joined Steel & Tube as an Independent Director in March 2017, but has stood down from the Board after being appointed interim Chief Executive on 25 September 2017. Mark was permanently appointed as Chief Executive on 22 February 2018. Mark has had significant executive experience both in NZ and overseas. He worked with ExxonMobil Corporation for over 19 years and was Chief Executive of Fletcher Buildings largest division, Infrastructure Products, which included transforming their steel distribution businesses. 
STU posted a shock loss in early 2018 and has been under fire and fined for false claims about its steel mesh. Hear how Mark and his team have returned the company to the black and how Mark expects STU to be positioned for future business growth.

Asanthe Wijeyeratne - PaySauce (PYS)

Our guest speaker for May is Asanthe Wijeyeratne, CEO and Founder of PaySauce. He has over 20 years’ experience focussed on helping small businesses navigate the difficult landscape of effective payroll. His formal background in accounting combined with his ‘people first’ attitude, has seen him successfully build a number of businesses into market leadership positions.
Asantha was the driving force behind the creation and growth of SmartPayroll/SmartBooks which he grew to service close to 10,000 SME’s in NZ before exiting in December 2013.  Starting in 2014 his latest venture, PaySauce, has already established itself as the leading Agriculture payroll provider with significant month on month growth achieved since its inception. Built on world-class solution architecture and offered 100% from the cloud, leading strategic growth in overseas markets is his next big horizon.
Asantha migrated as a young accountant from Sri Lanka in December 1988 and worked initially as a financial controller for a manufacturing company for 6 years. He then began his entrepreneurial journey which was focussed on the SME market segment. In recognition of his contribution to business and the community he was awarded a Queens Service Medal (QSM) in the New Year’s honours list in 2013. Asantha is a past president of the New Zealand Sri Lanka Friendship Society.

Mark Lister - Craigs Investment Partners

Our guest speaker for June is Mark Lister, Head of Private Wealth Research at Craigs Investment Partners. Mark and his team are responsible for all of the asset allocation, strategy and portfolio recommendation decisions for Craigs clients. Mark concentrates on economic analysis and investment strategy, has a team of analysts for investment strategy, and a team of analysts who concentrate on specific market sectors or regions. In his spare time Mark enjoys muscle cars and V8s, taking his children to the skate park and listening to music especially Metallica.

Before joining Craigs, Mark worked in the electricity sector for a number of years holding various analytical roles. He holds a bachelor of Management Studies from the University of Waikato with a major in Finance. Mark has a prolific presence in the business media, is a regular newspaper columnist and frequently travels the country speaking to a range of business groups and engaging with the Craigs network of offices.

Expect a lively look at the New Zealand investment environment from the expert commentator!
