NEXT WELLINGTON BRANCH MEETING - Tuesday 25 February 2020

While this is not a normal branch meeting, we are starting the 2020 year with an informal New Year Get Together (Our normal monthly meeting will follow on Tues 10 March and we have Robbie Urquhart of Fisher Funds Management booked as our guest speaker.)

Our new year get together brings together art and investing with a special presentation on Wearable Arts plus an Investing Quiz night!
This is an ideal opportunity to kick-off the year with an event that helps to bring members together so we can get to know each other a little bit better!  To embrace art with investing we have Fifi Coston to talk about her experience and enthusiasm for WOW...and to act as our investment quiz master!  Fifi has a richly varied career as an award-winning junior fiction novelist, children's book illustrator, film costumier and prop designer and long-standing TV presenter of arts and crafts. On top of all that Fifi is a veteran of Wearable Arts with 26 finalist entries over 24 years.  In 2017, her piece The Organ Farmer won the Weta Workshop Science Fiction Award.  She will also bring the interesting perspective of being the wife of a 'would-be investor', Adrian Parkyn!

Please mark this date on your calendar – Tues 25 Feb 2020.

Branch Meetings

We meet on the second Tuesday of most months from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Meetings take place at the Khandallah Town Hall at 11 Ganges Rd, Khandallah.  This is very close to the Box Hill railway station (on the Johnsonville line) and there are regular buses to the Khandallah village (no's 24 and 25).

Easy and accessible parking is available on the street at the venue.  For more information email wellington@nzshareholders.co.nz.

Share Investing Quiz Night - informal social evening
As an alternative to having a Christmas function, we are starting the year with an informal get together.  And what better way to do this than doing this over refreshments!  Plus hear all about WOW from Fifi Colston.
This will be great for both seasoned investors and those completely new to investing...and as you will get split up into teams you will get to know each other a bit more over the evening!  Plus we will have a few random general knowledge type questions thrown in to keep you all on your toes!

Tue 10 Mar Robbie Urquhart - Barramundi Fund Portfolio Manager, Fisher Funds Management Ltd

Our guest speaker for March is Robbie Urquhart, Barramundi Fund Portfolio Manager.  Robbie has worked as a portfolio manager and analyst since 2001 in both New Zealand and London where he held various roles with Trafalgar Copley, Copenhagen Capital and FNZC. He holds a Master of Business Studies in Finance (First Class Honours) from Massey University, and prior to this completed a BCom (cum laude) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
Sharesight shows Barramundi being up 19.4% over the last 12 months, providing a dividend yield of 9.6% and capital gain of 9.8%. They have also made headlines in the NZ Herald, (‘Barramundi gives BHP the flick’) where Robbie explained; the fund had "drawn a line in the sand" over BHP's continued production of thermal coal – burnt in power stations to generate electricity.  Hear Robbie outline his investment strategy for Barramundi, the Responsible Investing Policy they have in place and his expectation of continued earnings growth.

Tue 14 April Mark Malpass - Steel & Tube Holdings Ltd (STU)

Our guest speaker for April is Mark Malpass, CEO of Steel & Tube Holdings.  Mark first joined Steel & Tube as an Independent Director in March 2017, but has stood down from the Board after being appointed interim Chief Executive on 25 September 2017. Mark was permanently appointed as Chief Executive on 22 February 2018. Mark has had significant executive experience both in NZ and overseas. He worked with ExxonMobil Corporation for over 19 years and was Chief Executive of Fletcher Buildings largest division, Infrastructure Products, which included transforming their steel distribution businesses.
STU posted a shock loss in early 2018 and has been under fire and fined for false claims about its steel mesh. Hear how Mark and his team have returned the company to the black and how Mark expects STU to be positioned for future business growth.
