Dorian Devers - CFO, Contact Energy Limited (NZX-CEN)

Our guest speaker for April is Dorian Devers of Contact Energy Limited. Contact Energy is a New Zealand electricity generatornatural gas wholesaler and electricity, natural gas, broadband and LPG retailer.

  • It's power stations consist of three gas turbine facilities in Hamilton, Hawkes Bay and Taranaki; five geothermal stations north of Taupo; and two hydroelectric dams on the Clutha River.
  • Contact originated with the partitioning of the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand in 1996, and publicly listed in 1999.

Dorian is experienced in business transformations having led successful turnarounds of businesses in both the UK and South Africa.  He has successfully delivered a number of acquisitions including ones in the Australian and New Zealand energy sector.  He has governance experience having served on the Board of Afrox a publicly listed company and the largest industrial gases business in Africa, as well as being a previous Board member of Liquigas New Zealand LPG infrastructure business.

Kristen Lunman, Co-founder & GM, Hatch

Our guest speaker for May 2021 is Kristen Lunman, Co-founder & General Manager of Hatch. Hatch is a digital investment platform that gives New Zealanders access to the US share markets and allows them to invest in well-known brands such as Apple, Amazon or Netflix.

The quick overview is:

  • Hatch gives New Zealanders  access to full and fractional shares in individual companies and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) listed on the US share markets.
  • Their aim is to simplify investing for New Zealanders by giving them access to tools and products they need to build their financial futures. Hatch started by giving savvy investors access to the US share markets.
  • Hatch’s point of difference is that it enables investors to buy portions of expensive shares like those of Berkshire Hathaway, which are currently US$382,698 (22/3/21). So instead of an investor going out and saying, ‘I want to buy X number of shares in Company X.’ they can say, ‘I want to invest X amount of dollars in Company X. Hatch doesn’t require a minimum investment.
  • Hatch is 100% owned by Kiwi Wealth Ltd, which is a sister company of Kiwibank. Both are members of the Kiwi Group Holdings

The quick bio on Kristen is:

  • She has over a decade of experience in running product teams across North America.
  • Kisten has played a pivotal role in the start-up ecosystem in New Zealand over the past five years.
  • She was the innovation director at Kiwi Wealth, Hatch’s parent company, as well as programme director for the Kiwibank Fintech Accelerator.
  • She also was the chief operating officer of Wipster, a video collaboration, publishing and analytics platform.
  • An active mentor, Kristen is passionate about women in leadership, governance, and founder roles.

This is a presentation that the Wellington Branch Committee is sure you will find very illuminating and highly interesting.  It's not to be missed.
[Side note: Hatch also gave permission for the Wellington Branch to use their online education resources for the new investor seminar series we ran last year.]
